Eight Brilliant Minds on the Future of Online Education
Online education is not what you used to think. Today at no cost you can take a graduate level class from a world class university such as MIT in the USA. This IT enabled revolution is termed MOOC. A massive open online course (MOOC) is a type of online course aimed at large- scale participation and open access via the web.
For me what this means is going back to basic pleasures of "learning". I am of the opinion that many of us have lost our "curiosity" to learn. Learn from anything and everything. Isn't it wonderful to have the ability to do that on a world class level with hundreds of thousands of people from around the world while you are at home (to me a place with a decent Internet connection)!! In most cases prerequisites are not there.
Home can be a school in a rural village in Sri Lanka or a corporate office in Colombo. One needs to know English ...well at least for now. But I am sure soon they will have a Tamil professor or a CEO giving lectures in Tamil. May be a brilliant scholar in one of those universities will start in Sinhala. We should start doing that instead of waiting for others. Think about it.
